Research - Film Posters

For this task. I researched 3 film posters;
Marvel - The Avengers
The Notebook
Shutter Island

I chose these film posters as they are all completely different genres and have no overlap. The Avengers is an action/superhero film, The Notebook is romance and Shutter Island is a thriller.

Even though these are all different genres, they all have very similar layouts. It is clear to see that the picture covers the majority of these posters. This is to give the audience a very clear idea to what the film will be about without any information about it. For example - The picture for The Notebook is two people kissing. Without having ever seen the film, I can instantly imply that it will be a romance. The rain also connotes a sad or sombre theme.

The colours used in these posters also heavily emphasize the theme/direction of the film. An example of this is in the Shutter Island poster. With the simple use of a black and white face at the top of the poster, a dark blue sea and a black background and a lit flame connotes many things - The black and dark blue connote mystery as it makes the shot darker and less visible unless paid attention to. This connotes themes such as loneliness or mystery, which are key themes within Thrillers. A lit flame on a match could imply that he is using it for light, meaning the film could have low-key lighting throughout, a fundamental for creating suspense. The flame is also very highly saturated, making it a white sort of colour, which contrasts completely with the background and makes the flame stand out.

The layouts of these posters are all very similar - A large picture covering the majority of the poster, the actors/people involved in the film either at the top or bottom. This is done in a small and thin font to not draw away any attention from the main focal points of the poster. A release date towards the bottom of the poster and a slogan or tagline, to give the audience a little more of an insight. These posters market the films in various ways. For example, The Avengers markets it by the use of their well-known cast and if people are fans of these actors, they may want to go see the film. On the other hand, The Notebook markets itself by saying "From the best selling novel". This may make the audience think that it has a very enthralling story-line which could make the audience watch it.

All of the titles of the film are in the bottom portion of the poster and are in the middle. The fonts used are bigger and bolder than the other text on the poster which makes it stand out and ensures that no other pieces of text will be confused with the title. Some use different colours to the rest of the text or contrasting text to the background colour to make the title stand out.
