Music Production

For our thriller film, we could not find any music that would fit our film in terms of timing, and use of instruments during certain points. For example, our trailer starts slow and builds up. There were very few pieces of music that do this and the ones that do, we felt like they did not fit our production. We decided to make our own music using Fruity Loops 10.

These are the instruments/sounds that were used to put together our piece of music. This is all before we actually put together the notes and melodies/beats, these were just our choices of instruments and sounds.

This is the start of the music production. There aren't many instruments used, just sound effects. The  oscillations show the music getting louder or quieter, depending on how large the oscillation is. As you can see, there is a gradual build up of sound as seen in the top row, and then it gets quieter and louder again. Where it gets quieter, there are other sounds to fill in the silence shown in the second row. The quiet to loud emphasises tension and adds a foreshadowing of danger or death. In the third row you can see the shorter parts of music. These are drum beats and we plan to time them to certain parts of our film. The parts in-between the beats are silent breaks. There is no sound playing for about a second and it adds to the mystery, something that is key in thriller films.

This section is the drums and piano speeding up towards the end. Again, this is to build tension and add slight unease to the audience watching. The tempo of the drum beats getting faster adds the effect of a crescendo on top of all the other sound effects getting louder. This effect is used to simply build something up to an end result, and I feel like this works effectively in our trailer as it starts off calm and slowly gets more and more intense.

  1. Rahib, I am worried that you are falling seriously behind with your blog. We've already talked about this and you assured me you were 'on top of things' No posts since mid December is not good. This must be remedied ASAP - deadline for the whole thing is looming (February half term). Sir
